A good comparison! I hope that FOSS mobile developers get behind these devices, and push mobile Linux development forward. I've been following Sailfish OS for years, but it seems to be pretty stagnant.

Indeed. I still have jolla phone in my drawer and from time to time i update it to see whats new and play for a day or two, but really looks like things arent moving much. Those that do (in ui shpere) less and less remind me of briliance of swipe ideas and more start resembling tap ios/android style.
Checking together jolla page shows that people ask and struggle with the same questions since i've been using jolla as my main device. It's a pitty because sailfish had a great potential.

I call it the curse of Maemo. Nokia had a great product with the N900/N9 just to proceed shooting themselves in the foot repeatably. Jolla (who came from Nokia's Maemo team) had a nice product with the Jolla phone and great community support, just to proceed shutting down their hardware department and develop a closed down for pay phone OS which is pretty much the exact opposite of what they should have done.
Yes they had issues with the hardware... hardware is hard to get right. But a new phone OS can only survive if there is hardware to run it on properly and wide community support.
I guess at least Pine64 seems to get it right...

The thing with pine64 is there is no stofware so they rely on other distros that atm are even less baked then sailfishOS. Purism took different position on this and thanks to them we have libhandy and at this point much more apps and better ecosystem with convergence in the front row. But that of course comes with the price (for the phone).

Problem with Jolla is that for some reason (IMO) they indeed somehow did not understand their potential and role. They had a very motivated and nearly fanatic user base from the day one (I used to be one of them). It seems like they could not care less about it. Instead of opening the system right off the bat (at least the base apps) they kept finding excuses and kept using famous "soon(tm)". To the point where even up until now all the base apps still look like an alpha preview, with ton of stuff not working, instead of listening to the community who even started developing patches (so ready made solutions), Jolla does not care about the input and does its own thing, while the rest of users need to still struggle with patches to make the best of it. Jolla could have become what pine and purism are now if they would understand their audience and they would do it years ago. Instead they tried to compete with apple and google and now target enterprise sector, which means they have no interest in use cases of an avarage joe. Probably there is some money in it seeing how Russia and other countries now try to get rid of influences of big corporations from America, but that does not mean things will get better for users.

someone said. Why would you change whats not broken? It seems like they are so invested in small cosmetic fixes (that basically ruin the experience for everyone but thats another story) while there are things that are seriously broken or half baked for years.
Scrolling through together.jolla.com brings back the memories of people (me included) discussing and reporting things with very little response. I see people still talking about things and issues I've been discussing over 6 years ago. It's a pity because the entire idea in the beginning behind jolla (the other half idea, the amazing UI with the swipe rather then tap) was quite awesome and different in comparison to the competition at the same time seemed like it will work.
