After a lot of research, I ended up ordering a 1080p IPS screen from
Thinkparts. I originally scoffed at the $20 shipping fee, but it arrived in five days from China. So that twenty was well spent in my opinion.
My screen ended up being Lenovo FRU 04X0324. According to a
fantastic blog post on Yolops.net, the FRU 00HN899 was a drop in replacement. So that is the one I ordered, and was super thrilled that it was indeed just a drop in upgrade. No additional spacers or alterations were required for the bezel.
Speaking of the bezel, the way Lenovo designed the frame for the screen is interesting. It is held in place by the bezel which has a ring of plastic clips on its edge. No glue. No brackets. The monitor can nearly be removed using nothing except your fingernails. I only had to dig out a hobby knife to gently pry up the tape covering the 30-pin cable connector.
Anyway... EZ upgrade and the difference is huge.
